11/07/08 - Vitamin K2, Not K1, Promotes Bone Health

Flawed study discounts Vitamin K's effectiveness in the prevention and treatment of osteopenia/osteoporosis. But Longevity Medicine Review's Lara Pizzorno, MDiv, MA, LMT, writes that the study "Vitamin K: No Help for Bone Density" published Oct. 14, 2008, in PLOS Medicine used the wrong form of vitamin K. 9/26/08 - Small Doses of Dark Chocolate May be Heart Healthy

Scientists working on the Moli-sani Project in Campobasso, Italy, which investigates risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), say they have evidence that consumption of small or moderate amounts of dark chocolate may decrease levels of serum C-reactive protein (CRP). CRP is an indicator of inflammation and major risk factor for heart disease. The study was published in the October, 2008 issue of Journal of Nutrition.

9/25/08 - Splenda® Shown to Suppress Beneficial Gut Bacteria.

A study conducted by researchers from Duke University in North Carolina and co-sponsored by the Sugar Association has shown that consuming the sweetener Splenda at doses within the US FDA’s Acceptable Daily Intake may suppress beneficial bacteria in the gut. The findings were published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part A, and suggest Splenda causes numerous adverse effects.

9/11/08 - Mediterranaean Diet Shown to Reduce Mortality

Researchers at the University of Florence, Italy, report that adherence to a Mediterranean-type diet is associated with significant improvement in health status. The meta-analysis review published in the British Medical Journal reported significant reduction in overall mortality, reduction in mortality from cardiovascular disease, and reduction in mortality from cancer, by those who adhere to the principles of a Mediterranean-type diet.

9/10/08 - Vitamin K2 shown to reduce arterial calcification by 20%.

In study published in the journal Atherosclerosis, scientisits from the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, University Medical Center Utrecht, have demonstrated that increased intake of menaquinone(vitamin K2) may reduce the build up of calcium in arteries that leads to hardening of the arteries.

8/12/08 - Vitamin D deficiency associated with 26% increase in all-cause mortality.

That’s what Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University had to say after looking at the vitamin D levels and mortality rates of some 13,000 people. The study, published in the August 11, 2008 edition of Archives of Internal Medicine, demonstrates the importance of maintaining healthy vitamin D levels at all times.
